I would strongly recommend NOT taking down a tree unless you already have experience doing it. A neighbor of mine, who was a roofer so he is comfortable with ladders and with heights, was taking down a tree (actually…he was up in the tree cutting branches). He lost his footing, fell and was pierced by a branch on the way down. After three months in the hospital, he is alive…but he no longer has use of his left arm. Sure, he saved a few hundred dollars by not paying a tree expert. But he lost $400K to hospital bills in addition to being permanently disabled. The moral is…some things are best left to the experts.

I second the comments make before. One safety piece of equipment is a boom truck to ride up to cut off limbs. Even the “good” pro’s use this and they don’t even think about climbing and cutting anymore. Using a boom also allows cutting off pieces of limbs and letting them down. This makes possible cutting over buildings cable and telephone lines.
