My Elmer Harry, N0CCW Silent Key, told me of his first contacts with packet radio. His first TNC was a TAPR TNC-1 in the “Gucci” box.
Harry, having no one in San Antonio to connect to did as the manual suggested, he recorded “a connect” to his call from the TNC. Then he played it back to the audio input and saw “***Connected to N0CCW” on the terminal.
His first two-way packet connect was via satellite, it was AO-10 or AO-13 I think. He had to type on the computer, turn the rotor, adjust the elevator and tune for Doppler shift on the radio. It must have been quite a thing to watch.
