weird weather continues

The unusual weather conditions that I noticed in the late autumn continue with a mid-January storm blowing through Connecticut today. In the past hour, the WA1LOU weather station recorded temperatures in the mid-50s and wind speeds as high as 85 MPH!

Here is a screen shot from MacAPRS showing the high winds recorded at WA1LOU today (click on it to see it in full size).

weather pages are online

I put the weather pages online today. The pages are for my APRS weather station, WA1LOU.

horzepa.com is now online

I registered horzepa.com in June 2000. I had no immediate plans for the domain then; I just wanted to reserve it for the future.

Well, the future is here and horzepa.com is now online. It will host a blog and web pages of interest (to me).

Surfin': The Return of the HAAT Calculator

Read this week's installment of Surfin': The Return of the HAAT Calculator, then add your comments here.

Heavy weather

We had about 12 inches of snow during the past 24 hours. Those 12 inches melted down to 0.69 inches according to the rain gauge here. This was one of the heaviest/wettest snows I had the pleasure of removing from the driveway and walkways here. Usually it takes me about 90 minutes to 2 hours to remove 10 to 12 inches of snow. Today, I spent about 5 hours doing the job and I was unable to remove all of it. As a result, my driveway and walkways are much narrower then usual.

Surfin' Update: HAATs Off To The FCC

Way back in March 2001, I wrote about an online HAAT (height above average terrain) calculator on the FCC web site. Shortly after that installment of Surfin' was posted, the calculator went off line for maintenance.

The calculator was very popular and I still get e-mails complaining about its disappearance.

Today, I received an e-mail from Dale Bickel at the FCC. Dale had some very good news: the HAAT calculator is back online at http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/haat_calculator.html. Excellent!

A caveat: The calculator uses the metric system, so convert the height of your station's antenna radiation center above mean sea level (RCAMSL) to meters before inputting the it into the calculator. The calculator's resulting HAAT is also in meters.

Consume, then Diet

From Halloween to New Year's Eve, we are encouraged to consume, consume, and consume some more. Suddenly, New Year's Day dawns on us and we are encouraged to diet, diet, and diet some more. What a load!

Surfin' Update: Time for the Leaping Second

This just in from John Ackermann, N8UR, "I did the leap second in style and have a page up with my results. I recorded the audio from WWVB, CHU, and two frequencies of WWV, as well as capturing the serial data from a couple of receivers and trying (without much success) to get a photo of the leap second on the only receiver I have that has a human-readable display (it didn't behave the way I thought it would -- which qualifies it as an "experiment", I guess)."

Happy New Year

I blew right through the leap second last night watching Good Will Hunting on the dish. When the movie ended at 12:10 AM, I switched over to see the ceremonies at Times Square.

The crowd was already breaking up. Dick Clark spoke. Post-stroke, he wasn't speaking clearly. I powered down and went to bed.

New Year's is a holiday that doesn't do much for me. When I was a youngster, the main attraction of New Year's Eve was that my parents would let us stay up until midnight. Back then, Dick Clark did not do New Year's Eve. Instead, they had Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians performing at some hotel in NYC. His music was not my cup of tea, but there was not much else to watch on the tube back then New Year's Eve-wise.

By the time Dick Clark started doing New Year's Eve, most of the music that accompanied his New Year's shows was not my cup of tea either. My rock tastes were firmly entrenched in the 1950s and 1960s and what he was presenting was not.

Last night, Mariah Carey was the big attraction on his show. In my opinion, Mariah Carey is not rock 'n' roll and I had no interest in watching her performance. Instead, I watched movies on the dish and finished reading Jerry Lewis' book, A Love Story, which is about his relationship with his ex-partner Dean Martin.

The beginning of the book started slow and I thought I would give up on it, but it got more interesting around Chapter 3 and I finished it in a few days. Go figure... I never was a big fan of Jerry Lewis' comedy, but I always found him to be an interesting person. (Coincidentally, as I write this, a Gary Lewis song started playing on iTunes.)

I learned in Jerry's book that his son, Gary, enlisted and went to Vietnam after his rock career tail-ended. He came back from the war "a wreck, unable to sleep, unable to erase the horrible images of combat from his mind." ...another victim of the American military-industrial complex.

Gary Lewis appeared here at the Wolcott country fair a few years ago, performing all his big hits, and was a real crowd-pleaser. We had a great time, bought Gary Lewis & the Playboy T-shirts, and my sister even got his autograph for me. I feel bad for him in retrospect.
